Important Note: This hike should only be attempted with a guide or local expert due to its dangerous sections, especially in wet oder foggy weather!
The circular hike on the ridge of Pico do Alto, located in the village of Boaventura on the north coast of Madeira, is one of the most thrilling and spectacular hikes on the island. If you are the lucky owner of a drone or action camera, don't forget it on this hike! Spectacular shots guaranteed.
To undertake this hike, you must be free of vertigo, as you'll encounter numerous steep and unsecured sections. However, the effort is rewarded with unparalleled views: Sao Jorge on one side, Boaventura on the other, and the vast expanse of the cristal blue sea and green mountains all around. It is undoubtedly one of the best views Madeira has to offer! Even Seixal and Porto Moniz are visible in the distance - are simply breathtaking.
The hike spans approximately 10 km, a distance not to be underestimated. Plan for 4-6 hours to complete the hike safely, as it involves about 500 meters of ascent and descent (a total of 1000 meters of elevation change). You'll navigate muddy paths, large stones, and trails without signposts or safety measures, demanding concentration and stamina. For adventurers, this is a guaranteed highlight. After about 1-1.5 hours, you will reach the steep, macabre ridge of Pico do alto through wild forests. Those who have no problem with steep slopes will be rewarded here for the steep climb.
After a few kilometers of trekking through dense paths, you'll suddenly reach the stunning and lesser-known viewpoint Miradouro das Voltas. In good weather, this spot offers panoramic views of the entire mountain range, Boaventura, and the coast all the way to Porto Moniz - absolutely impressive! This dreamy vantage point is the perfect place for a little refreshment. You can also fill up your water bottles with fresh water at the fountain. Once here, the climb is complete, and the trail leads mostly downhill through the forest, along the Levada das Faias. The descent unveils a new perspective of the Boaventura Valley, framed by a majestic mountain panorama.
However, caution is essential. Do not attempt this hike alone or without a local guide! The path is secretive and can be perilous in places, making it imperative to undertake this hike with an experienced guide. If you are not staying with us or participating in one of our hiking weeks, ensure you find a knowledgeable local to accompany you.
Want to relax and regain your strength after the hike? We highly recommend the beautiful viewpoint Miradouro de São Cristovão, just a 5-minute drive away in Ponta Delgada. Here, you can enjoy a magnificent view of Pico do Alto and the dramatic cliffs that make this experience complete. A little tip: the nearby "Restaurant São Cristóvão" serves incredibly delicious Bolo do Caco, which tastes even better after such an incredible adventure!
