Hiking the Peak to Peak Trail (PR1): The Ultimate Adventure on Madeira’s Highest Peaks

Imagine walking between the clouds, with jagged peaks rising on either side… Welcome to Madeira’s most iconic trail, PR1—also known as the Peak-to-Peak or the ‘Stairway to Heaven.’

Note: as of September 2024, the trail is partially closed due to wildfire damage. Only the first 1.2 km starting from Pico do Arieiro is accessible. Always check the official websites before attempting the trail.

This legendary hike promises breathtaking views, thrilling terrain, and tunnels carved into the mountainside. And yes, there are plenty of stairs to climb along the way!

The PR1 trail connects two of Madeira’s highest peaks—Pico do Arieiro (1,818m) and Pico Ruivo (1,861m)—and is a must-see for adventurers visiting the island. It's become especially famous on social media, thanks to the "Stairway to Heaven," a dramatic stretch of stairs with sweeping views and steep drops on either side.

While we typically avoid tourist-heavy trails, this hike is truly one-of-a-kind. We’ve done it countless times, and each experience has been just as memorable. Trust us, you won’t want to miss this unforgettable adventure!

PR1 Trail Overview

Location and Length:

The Peak-to-Peak trail (PR1) can be hiked in either direction, starting at Pico do Arieiro or Pico Ruivo, with parking available near both trailheads—either at Pico do Arieiro or Achada do Teixeira, close to Pico Ruivo. The trail spans approximately 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) one way, with an elevation gain of around 650 meters in both directions. Depending on your fitness level (and how many photos you stop to take), the hike takes 2.5 to 3.5 hours each way, making it 5 to 7 hours for a round trip.

Difficulty Level:

Though the path is well-maintained and includes railings in many places, it’s rated as moderately challenging due to the numerous stairs, steep inclines, and the elevation change. For those who want to experience the trail without committing to a full round trip, there’s the option to hike one way and take a taxi back. Taxis are available at either peak, costing around €100 - €120 (as of 2024), making it a more manageable day for those less inclined to tackle both directions.

Unique Features:

This hike is truly one-of-a-kind. From navigating narrow ridgelines to passing through tunnels in the mountains, the trail offers constant visual rewards. With countless stairs and breathtaking views of Madeira’s rugged volcanic landscape, the PR1 ensures there’s never a dull moment.

Highlights Along the Route

Pico do Arieiro:

Starting at one of Madeira’s highest peaks, Pico do Arieiro (1,818 meters), the adventure begins with jaw-dropping views. Often, you'll find yourself walking above the clouds, adding a magical touch to the landscape. On a clear day, you can spot surrounding peaks like Pico Grande and even catch glimpses of the sea on both sides of the island, making this an unforgettable starting point.

Miradouro do Ninho da Manta:

About 15-20 minutes into the hike, you’ll arrive at the Miradouro do Ninho da Manta, a stunning viewpoint that offers panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. This platform is a favorite stop for less experienced hikers looking for a taste of the trail without going the full distance. Its proximity to Pico do Arieiro makes it an ideal spot to turn back while still enjoying some of the island’s most spectacular scenery.

Stairway to Heaven:

Arguably the most photographed part of the trail, the Stairway to Heaven is a must-see. Roughly 1.2 kilometers from Pico do Arieiro, you'll reach this iconic viewpoint after about 20-30 minutes of hiking. This steep stretch of stairs, with dramatic cliffs on either side, has gained fame on social media, and it’s easy to see why—it’s a perfect photo opportunity and a thrilling part of the journey.

Pico das Torres:

Standing at 1,851 meters, Pico das Torres is Madeira’s second-highest peak and only accessible by foot. Nestled between Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo, it serves as a memorable milestone along the route. The rocky, narrow paths around Pico das Torres offer some of the most challenging and rewarding parts of the hike.

Pico Ruivo:

As the highest point on Madeira at 1,861 meters, Pico Ruivo is the ultimate reward at the end of the trail. The panoramic views from the summit are breathtaking, offering a sweeping look at the island’s interior and the northern coastline. Reaching this peak is an accomplishment and a highlight of any visit to Madeira.

Rest Stops:

This physically demanding hike requires preparation, so be sure to pack plenty of water and snacks. Fortunately, there are a few spots along the way to refuel and take in the surroundings:

  • Pico do Arieiro Café and Shop: Located right at the start of the trail, this café offers food, drinks, and restrooms (with a small fee of 50 cents). Though a bit pricey, the views from the top more than make up for it.

  • Casa de Abrigo do Pico Ruivo: About 500 meters before reaching Pico Ruivo, you’ll find this mountain hut. While it’s only accessible by foot, it offers a great place to rest. Keep in mind that stock can be limited and restrooms may not always be available, but it’s a pleasant spot with indoor and outdoor seating.

  • Achada do Teixeira - Mountain Spot Café: If you choose to start or end your hike at Achada do Teixeira (near Pico Ruivo), you’ll find another café with refreshments and restrooms. It’s a convenient stop for those hiking only one way or beginning their journey from this side.

Practical Information and Tips

Best Time to Hike:

While many visitors tackle this trail at sunrise, the increasing popularity means that private cars are no longer allowed at the summit during sunrise hours. Instead, you’ll need to take a shuttle from Funchal. Although the sunrise views from Pico do Arieiro are undoubtedly stunning, we prefer starting the hike around midday. By then, the first wave of tourists has usually cleared out, leaving the trail less crowded. Since the path is narrow in many sections, fewer people make for a more enjoyable experience. Plus, starting later means the trail is typically pretty quiet on your return journey, giving you more space to soak in the views at your own pace.

What to Bring:

This is a long and physically demanding hike, so it’s essential to be well-prepared:

  • Water and Food: Bring plenty of water and enough food to keep your energy up throughout the hike.

  • Weather Gear: The weather in the mountains can change quickly, so dress in layers. Pack sunscreen, a hat, and a jacket or windbreaker for potential cold or wind when clouds roll in.

  • Proper Footwear: Sturdy hiking boots or shoes are essential to handle the rocky, uneven terrain.

  • Flashlight: There are several tunnels along the way, so bring a flashlight or make sure your phone is charged for its flashlight feature. A power bank can be handy for long hikes.

Safety Precautions:

Ensure you're adequately prepared by wearing the right gear and being mindful of your surroundings. Always check the weather before setting out, using local webcams (such as Madeiranet.com) to ensure safe conditions. Take your time on the steep and narrow sections, and use caution throughout the hike, especially if the weather shifts.

Our Conclusion

The PR1 Peak-to-Peak Trail is truly an unforgettable adventure, offering some of the most spectacular views Madeira has to offer. Whether you're captivated by the dramatic ridgelines, enchanted by the tunnels, or simply in awe of the island's volcanic landscape, this hike is a must for any visitor seeking an epic outdoor experience. While it can be a popular route, the beauty and challenge of the trail make it well worth the effort.
